Encounters With Witches
First Encounter With a Witch
When I was around sixteen years old, there was a lady in my neighborhood who was infatuated with me. She was ten years older than me and divorced. I met her at a street party, and for her, it was love at first sight. It was flattering to my ego, but I was sixteen and so immature in all respects. She asked for my number and she would call my house incessantly. She would drive by my house (I lived with my parents) about four or five times a day. She would leave love letters in the mailbox. I met her through her sister, who was my age and attended San Fernando High School with me. She told me that her older sister was in love with me; I certainly did not understand what love meant at sixteen years old. Certainly not Christian love known as agape, which means unconditional love, total self-donation, self-sacrificing love. That definition was nowhere on my radar.
To be honest, even though I was young, I was turned off by this older lady because she had a reputation for being promiscuous according to some of my friends in high school who had attended parties with her. Even though I was young, I could see that this lady had been extremely wounded by men in her past relationships. She hounded me for about three months, so one day, out of pity and peer pressure, I went to have lunch with her at a fast-food place at the San Fernando mall.
We started seeing each other, and she saw that I was not experienced or promiscuous, so she took me to a âhealer.â She said that the healer would help me fall in love with her and be with her forever. I started to understand that this woman was impulsive and irrational. We drove over to this âbotanica.â (A botanica is a storefront where occult items are sold and often there is a back room or parlor where occult activity and witchcraft occurs for paying customers.)
Immediately, Godâs grace kicked in, and I knew that this botanica in San Fernando where I found myself was actually the parlor of a witch and that I was flirting with evil. I sat there very nervous with this older woman, and she said, âDonât be afraid; it will not hurt at all.â The older Hispanic lady introduced herself as hermana curandera Gloria (sister Gloria the healer).
I felt very uncomfortable with this witch in front of me lighting candles and incense around the parlor; she had a lot of masks that looked like demons plastered all over the wall; she had a lot of Aztec pagan images and statues. She also had a statue of Our Lady of Guadalupe in the corner of the room which was illuminated with six black candles around her. Seven is the number of God, the number of perfection, the number of the covenant. Six is the number of imperfection; add two more sixes and you have 666, the number of the beast (cf.
